Hello, hello! 👋🏻

If you've been watching Anthropic's Claude evolve, you might have noticed their Excel add-in quietly became accessible to everyone with a Pro plan. What was previously locked behind the $100-200/month Max tier is now available at $20/month.

If you spend time in spreadsheets, building campaign models, analyzing performance data, cleaning CRM exports, Let's show you why I'm using this more and more.

What Is Claude in Excel?

Claude in Excel is Anthropic's official Microsoft Excel add-in. It adds a sidebar to your Excel window where you can have conversations with Claude about your spreadsheet.

This isn't a copy-paste workflow or a browser extension. Claude can actually read your open workbook; cells, formulas, tab structure, everything. When it explains something, it provides cell-level citations. When it makes changes, it highlights exactly what it modified and why.

Technical details:

  • Works on Excel 2016+ (Mac, Windows, and Excel on the web)

  • Uses Claude Opus 4.5 (you can't switch models)

  • Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Option+C (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+C (Windows)

  • Install from Microsoft Marketplace: search "Claude by Anthropic in Excel"

The Pricing Change

What changed: Anthropic announced "Claude Skills” in Oct that included Excel access for Pro subscribers. Before that, you needed the Max plan.

Important requirement: You need to enable two toggles in your Claude settings:

1. "Code execution and file creation"

2. "Skills"

Without both enabled, the Excel feature won't work even if you're on Pro.

Where Claude in Excel earns its keep for marketers:

Campaign Performance Analysis

Feed Claude a performance export and ask direct questions:

  • "Which channels had the highest CPA increase month-over-month?"

  • "Identify campaigns where CTR dropped more than 20% while spend increased"

  • "Create a summary table showing top 10 campaigns by ROAS"

Claude will reference specific cells in its answers, so you can verify everything.

Budget Modeling

Building a marketing budget model with multiple scenarios:

  • "Create a budget template with columns for Q1-Q4, rows for each channel, and formulas that calculate totals and YoY change"

  • "Add a scenario toggle that switches between conservative, moderate, and aggressive growth assumptions"

Claude preserves formula dependencies, so your model actually works.

Data Cleaning

For messy CRM exports or campaign data:

  • "Standardize the date formats in column C to YYYY-MM-DD"

  • "Split the 'Full Name' column into 'First Name' and 'Last Name'"

  • "Find and flag duplicate email addresses"

Reporting Templates

Building reusable reports:

  • "Create a dashboard layout with conditional formatting that highlights underperforming metrics in red"

  • "Add VLOOKUP formulas to pull campaign names from the reference sheet"

Attribution Tracking

For multi-touch attribution:

  • "Build a weighted attribution model where first touch gets 40%, last touch gets 40%, and middle touches split 20%"

  • "Create an INDEX-MATCH formula to pull conversion data by campaign ID"

Claude vs Copilot Which Should You Use?

The key difference: Claude gives you control. Your file stays local, no AutoSave required. Copilot requires OneDrive and AutoSave enabled, which isn't always what you want.

Price comparison:

  • Claude Pro/Team: $17/$20 a month annual

  • Microsoft Copilot: $18 to $32 a month annual

  • ChatGPT Plus: $20 month (but no native Excel integration)

Claude Limitations:

Before you get too excited, here are the constraints:

File restrictions:

  • Only works with .xlsx and .xlsm files

  • Limited to 30 MB file size

  • Can only access the currently open workbook

What Claude can't do:

  • Create conditional formatting (can explain how, but can't build it)

  • Build data validation rules

  • Write or run VBA macros

  • Create data tables

  • Use external add-in functions

Other limitations:

  • Chat history doesn't save between sessions

  • Model is locked to Opus 4.5—no switching to faster/cheaper models

  • Only reads the open workbook (can't reference other files)

For most marketing spreadsheet work, these limitations won't matter. But if you're building complex macro-driven reports, Claude isn't the right tool.

A Warning You Shouldn't Ignore

Anthropic is clear "Only use Claude in Excel with trusted spreadsheets."

This isn't boilerplate. There's a real risk called prompt injection.

What could happen: Malicious instructions can be hidden in cells, formulas, or comments. If you open an untrusted spreadsheet and ask Claude to help, those hidden instructions could manipulate Claude into:

  • Exporting data to external URLs

  • Modifying formulas in ways that hide errors

  • Taking destructive actions

Safe practices:

  • Don't use Claude with downloaded templates from unknown sources

  • Be cautious with vendor-provided spreadsheets

  • Don't use it with files from email attachments you haven't vetted

  • Stick to spreadsheets you or your team created
